11th Beowulf Notes

Recorded around the year 1000 A.D. by Anglo-Saxon scribes/monks

Anglo-Saxons left us few factual records of their life and history but in Beowulf recorded dreams, aspirations, and fears.
Story tells us what was important and valued.

Vocabulary
 EPIC: long narrative poem, sometimes developed orally, that celebrates the deeds of a legendary or heroic figure.
LEGENDARY HERO: larger-than-life character whose accomplishments are celebrated in traditional tales.
PARAPHRASE: identify the key details in a passage and restate them in your own words


What similarities do we see between Beowulf and
Lord of the Rings - journey for the saving of humanity
Harry Potter - mystical creatures
Hercules - heroic figure, important to be manly
Chuck Norris - hero is most powerful creature & always wins
Overall - All battles are between good and evil!


Who is Beowulf? Hero & legendary warrior, protagonist of legend
What is Herot? The Hall of the Danes
Who is Higlac? King of Geats
Who is Hrothgar? Danish King who was plagued by Grendel
Who is Grendel? The monster

What evidence do we see of Christianity and pagan beliefs?
Christianity - The story mentions Cain (Grendel was a descendent from)
Christianity - The language (By almighty God)
Pagan - Vengeance (Grendel's mother)
Pagan - Fate (everything is not controlled by God)

How long did Grendel terrorize Herot? 12 years
Why would Grendel go to Herot?
Think about if you were an outcast. He could have been jealous, curious, spiteful.
Obviously he could hear the drinking and festivities of the warriors.

Grendel represents evil ("shepherd of evil" "hell-forged hands" "guardian of crime")
Beowulf represents good ("lord" "brave king" buried in a tomb)

Who does Beowulf kill?
Grendel, Grendel's mother, the dragon

What is the difference between how Beowulf fights Grendel and the dragon?
His weapon he uses.

Who is Wiglaf?Geat & Wexstan's son who helps Beowulf defeat the dragon
How does Beowulf die? He is mortally wounded when fighting the dragon
